Your Pantry Makeover

Thrive Market Pantry

‘Tis the season that many of us are desiring to eat healthier. My experience is that a full refrigerator and pantry are our best bet to ensure healthy choices. Today, I wanted to share what you want and don’t want in your pantry for healthy living. I get almost all of my pantry staples at Thrive Market because I trust the products and like the prices. You can get most of my favorite brands at Whole Foods or your local health store.

I hate food rules and restriction. On the whole, I’ll just suggest that you eat what makes you feel good. However, there are some foods that do not make it into my pantry. If there are chips and cookies, I’ll eat them. But those aren’t the foods I’m really worried about. The foods that I don’t put in my pantry are truly not good for you.

These include items with:

• Trans-fats (foods with hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats/oils)

• Added sugars (showing up in the ingredient list as sugar, brown rice syrup and corn syrup.) There are over 50 different ways of naming added sugar in your food!

• Enriched white or wheat flour is whole wheat flour stripped of some of its components and then some of the nutrients are added back in. Whole grain is a better choice.

• Additives, non-nutritive sweeteners, artificial colors - remember - whole foods or minimally processed foods don’t need anything to make them look or taste better.

I do my best to always have the following items stocked in my pantry. Even if I’m running low on produce, I can still whip up a healthy meal. Pretty much assume my choice is always organic if it’s available.

  • Lentils / beans

  • Whole grain pasta

  • Steel cut oats

  • Vegetable / Chicken / Beef broth

  • Nut milk like almond milk (unsweetened)

  • Almond butter / peanut butter

  • Pasta sauce

  • Protein powder

  • Olive oil / Avocado oil

  • Canned tuna / canned salmon

  • Seeds - sunflower, sesame, pumpkin

  • Nuts - pistachios, almonds, cashews

  • Popcorn

  • Green tea

  • Brown rice, Quinoa

  • Coconut oil

  • Coconut aminos
